The FounderMr. Douglas C. Gordon received his basic graphics training and certification in the UK, covering all aspects of the Graphics Arts industry including inks and paper. Subsequently he attended many courses and lectures on graphic and optical reproduction and electronic design processes. After arriving in Canada, he was employed by British American Bank Note Company where he became expert in the reproduction of fine line structures. Promotion to the research department followed, and as nominal department head he was resident expert in security design and product development. This enabled the company to be a world leader in the production of secure documents. While at BA the mandate allowed for investigation and analysis of all aspects of security print, including document applications and exploring available means of product improvement. This led to the investigation of technologies and numerous methods used in document protection including inks, paper, pigments, optical features including holograms, and the creation of graphic techniques to deter counterfeiters. Mr. Gordon was also required to be involved and knowledgeable in the state-of-the-art in different security products including passports, currency, credit cards, lottery tickets, ID documents, cheques, forms and labels. Mr. Gordon was one of the first to explore digital printers as a means for the personalisation of secure documents including the photo replacement. Support was provided to Sales & Marketing advising the department and keeping them appraised of future trends and up-coming technologies. The result was extensive knowledge of equipment, practices and covert devices used to produce secure products and consequently a knowledge of various counterfeiting techniques. This background provided a unique insight into the secure document market. Mr. Gordon holds three patents, has served on the ISO committee for passports and travel documents, has represented Canada at the ICAO meetings on travel documents and has attended the INTERPOL meeting in Ottawa, Canada. An invitation was also accepted to serve on the International Travellers Cheque Fraud Control Committee on anti-counterfeiting. He has performed adversarial analysis on numerous secure documents and their features from around the world and challenged many on their resistance to being illegally compromised. The development of the electronic imaging processes involved the assessment and eventual recommendation to his employer of preferred equipment and its use to improve the effectiveness of their product. This in turn led to the development of techniques to counter threats by illegal use of the same equipment by criminals. The internal mandate at BA included not only devising production techniques and processes but ensuring they worked. Specification and selection of various machines and equipment along with the special techniques used in the production of Secure Documents has led to a wide-ranging knowledge of the companies who contribute to the industry and an understanding of the needs of clients who purchase the products. Mr. Gordon worked with AIT Corporation as Senior Technical Advisor. Among his directives was advisor on materials and biographic printing units to revise the Canadian Passport issuance system. He worked closely with the client and their agents to ensure the security of the document was enhanced and in no way compromised. After three years Mr. Gordon left AIT and founded Calesec & Associates. He has since worked with government departments, private security organisations and different university research departments and assisted many companies in the development of new and dynamic products, enabling them to successfully enter the security market. Mr. Gordon has spoken at security conferences and served as Chairman of sessions on travel documents at international gatherings. He has also contributed to industry newsletters and magazines. He is regarded as a person of high integrity and wide-ranging personal experience.
